I want to Volunteer with EMS

Unfortunately there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to volunteering on an ambulance in South Africa and is very dependent from service to service. We have many requests, especially from school leavers wanting more information in this regard. Our best advice is to look at the below providers and make direct contact with your nearest service to determine their regulations.

The major service providers are:

Generally you will be able to ride along as an observers for a limited number of shifts as a form of exposure or career guidance. If you wish to volunteer and assist in patient management, then you will need some form of medical training. Currently the minimum qualification allowed to treat patient(s) in South Africa under the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa)is a BAA (Basic Ambulance Assistant). Some services may allow you as a first aider to give some limited assistance. You will be required to complete an indemnity form and usually you will be required to wear neutral cloths (eg. jeans and white t-shirt). If you are < 18 years, you will have to get a guardian to sign on your behalf.
There are several Volunteer Ambulance services, who can also be contacted (not limited to)
Western Cape
Gauteng
The best bet is to approach the local EMS service in your area directly and find out the requirements. Use the links above for more contact details. Also keep an eye out on our Forum, as many questions get answered there.
Good Luck
