Generally you will be able to ride along as an observers for a limited number of shifts as a form of exposure or career guidance. If you wish to volunteer and assist in patient management, then you will need some form of medical training. Currently the minimum qualification allowed to treat patient(s) in South Africa under the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa)is a BAA (Basic Ambulance Assistant). Some services may allow you as a first aider to give some limited assistance. You will be required to complete an indemnity form and usually you will be required to wear neutral cloths (eg. jeans and white t-shirt). If you are < 18 years, you will have to get a guardian to sign on your behalf.
