ECT stands for Emergency Care Technician. The ECT has successfully completed a Course Entitled: National Certificate in Emergency Care Technology. The exact title of the Course is unclear some places it’s a National certificate others, Certificate, and National Diploma. But all you need to know is that it’s a 2 year full time course. The course is in a Modular design, everything you study is in Modules similar to Chapters different to the mainstream approach of subjects seen in Universities...

The HPCSA has over the past several years has begun to move away from the short course structure and begin to implement teritary level qualifications. The reason for this - to improve quality of EMS personnel on the roads. Please read our News & Article's section, on several media releases pertaining to the changes in the EMS.
Training can be either offered through a training college - who offer the BAA / AEA / CCA qualifications (what is BAA / AEA / CCA ?) or through a tertiary facility offering a 4 year degree as a Paramedic (ECP - Emergency Care Practioner) or (ECT - Emergenct Care Technician).
Unfortunately there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to volunteering on an ambulance in South Africa and is very dependent from service to service. We have many requests, especially from school leavers wanting more information in this regard. Our best advice is to look at the below providers and make direct contact with your nearest service to determine their regulations.
A career in the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is an exciting one and yet daunting - with a great deal of responsibility. Many people in the industry say - it is a calling and you will either love it or hate it. For this reason, it is probably best to job shadow or volunteer a few shifts before making your career choice. Getting career advice is probably best done when volunteering at the local ambulance service.
